EDO ASSEMBLY PASSES SPORTS COMMISSION BILL

The Edo state House of Assembly on Tuesday 10 August, 2021, approved and passed the Bill for a Law to repeal the Bendel Sports Council Law,1967 and enacted the Edo State Sports Commission Law, 2021, which provides for the establishment of the Edo State Sports Commission and for Matters Connected Therewith.

The bill scaled its second and third reading after the Chairman of the House standing committee on information, youth and sports, Rt. Hon. Francis Okiye made a presentation to the House on the findings after carefully studying and analyzing the Bill application.

In his presentation, Rt. Hon. Okiye said the Bill was timely and good to go. He recommended the passage of the Bill into law citing that the Bill was in the interest of sport development in the state and job creation for the people of Edo state.

The Majority Leader, Hon. Henry Okhuarobo representing Ikpoba-Okha constituency applied to the House Speaker, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun for the plenary to be suspended and the house dissolved into a committee of the whole to enable the Parliamentarians do justice to presented copies of the findings regarding the Bill. His application was seconded by Rt. Hon. Yekini Idiaye respesenting Akoko-Edo 1. All in agreement, the plenary was thereafter suspended and the House dissolved into the committee of the whole for consideration of the Bill.

Sequel to the deliberation and consideration of the Bill, the House resumed plenary after all members spoke in favour of the Bill.  Consequently, Mr. Speaker requested for 24 clean copies of the Bill be sent the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for his assent. The law is to be cited as the Edo state Sports Commission law 2021.

Earlier, the house received a message from the Governor for the consideration and approval of the House to confirm Lady Tawakaltu Woyire as a member of Edo state Audit Commission. Lady Tawaltaku is nominated to replace Oduware Uwadiae who was initially confirmed to serve in the commission but was unable to take up the assignment due to unforeseen circumstances.

The speaker referred to the house committee on rules and business to ensure appropriate action is taken.

Plenary was therefore adjourned to Tuesday the 16th day of August, 2021.
